about

Freedom of a life-returned, and the prospect of rights protected are celebrated on D’água Negra’s new single Escárnio. An intense thrill-seeking journey, it matches the trio’s vocal harmonies with a feast of breakbeats and jazzed-out electric piano and is the first song from a yet announced debut album coming in the autumn.

In 2021 the group announced themselves with the release of their debut EP “Erógena”, a melange of electronic soul, vocal sweetness, jazz and resilience. Resilience born out of a particularly complex covid situation that gripped their home town of Manaus, in the north of Brazil. Yet two years on, and with their first shows outside Manaus under their belt - Sao Paulo, Rio De Janeiro and Belo Horizonte - the group, who identify as LGBTQIAP+, are positively bouncing. Manaus and indeed Brazil have begun a new chapter under new leadership of Lula, with much hope in the renewal of society and its values, and the rights and respect that brings.

Nestled within the Amazon, Manaus boasts incredible nature yet is traditionally conservative. Even with the criminalization of homo and transphobia, spaces in Manaus are not always so welcoming and there is a lack of resources for mental health and positive local action in the LGBTQIAP+ community. Yet within the bustling arts scene of the city, the diversity of folks are setting up businesses and making their mark, fuelling a sense of change in the air.

Escárnio was born on the stage before being translated in the studio. Already their performances are becoming known for their fierce energy (and craving desires) and whilst previous songs have taken a slower and groove based approach, this could be considered their rock'n roll moment. D'água Negra is jazz and drama, with complex feelings and complex identities but ultimately is about togetherness, not just within the group but after recent experiences in Manaus, togetherness in society.
The band's name it is worth saying, is a tribute to the
Rio Negro, which runs through the city and inspires D'água Negra with its its mysteries and mysticism.

lyrics

Quando eu te vejo
Todo o desejo escorrega
De cima da mesa
Pelas beiradas
Em cima da fresta

Copo vazio
Colher melada
Talher ruído
E a taça encostada

(E veja bem
É só sujeira estática, é tática
Eu ando com fome,
Eu ando sem fome
Eu ando com fome
Eu ando com fome

Eu fico imaginando quantas vezes eu ainda vou repetir
Eu fico imaginando quantas vezes eu ainda vou repetir (2x)

Eu to na beira

O som, a multidão
Descaso

Sem nada descalça
Na beira, sarjeta
sujeira no meu lugar
Cuspida de escárnio
Esculpida no asfalto
À esquerda dentro do bar

Eu fico imaginando quantas vezes eu ainda vou repetir
Eu fico imaginando quantas vezes eu ainda vou repetir (2x)

about

D'àgua Negra Manaus, Brazil

Take a deep breath. Dive in. What follows is strangeness, surprise, welcome, and pleasure, basically in that order. Explicitly inspired by the mystical river that runs through Manaus, D'Água Negra is about resilience, yes, but much more about movement and the transformative and absolutely necessary power of art. ... more
